Crown in a Day

July 31, 2016

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 5:35 pm
When you fracture a tooth, Drs. Jonathan or Laura Mears of JL Dental may recommend a dental crown to rebuild the tooth and protect the remaining tooth structure. Depending on how deeply your tooth is fractured, this can be an emergency. If that’s the case, then we can permanently repair your tooth with a crown in a day. Using the E4D system, our dentists can design, fabricate and bond your new crown over a broken tooth in just one appointment.

E4D in Arnold, MO

E4D is a comprehensive system that allows our dentists to manufacture dental crowns and other restorations right here in the office. Normally, we provide traditional crowns that are handcrafted in a dental lab. But when you need a crown in a hurry, E4D can be the ideal solution.

The E4D System

E4D consists of three separate units that work together in order to provide our patients with one-day crowns. The process begins with a digital intraoral camera that captures a detailed image of the damaged tooth, as well as surrounding and opposing teeth. These images are transferred to E4D’s computer, which is loaded with special software that creates a 3D virtual representation of your tooth. With this information, the computer designs your dental crown. Every detail is included—color, size, and shape, right down to the cusps and grooves of the chewing surface if the tooth is a molar. In this way, your new crown will feel no different than your natural tooth did when you bite down.

Finally, the design is sent to the milling unit that will fabricate your crown right here in our Arnold dental practice. Special burrs carve the crown from a single block of porcelain. Your crown will be ready for placement in less than 30 minutes.
Before bonding your crown into place, Dr. Jonathan Mears or Dr. Laura Mears will double-check the crown to make sure the fit is perfect. We also can use hand tools to further polish or stain your crown to exactly match the sheen of nearby teeth. Once the crown is cemented into place, you will have a fully functional tooth again.
To care for your new one-day crown, all you have to do is brush and floss just as you do for your natural teeth.

For a Crown in a Day, Call Our Office

If you’ve broken a tooth and suspect that you might need a dental crown, contact JL Dental to learn more about crowns in a day with the E4D System.

Your Dentist in Arnold, MO, Discusses Dental Health and Cosmetic Dentistry

When most people think of cosmetic dentistry, a more attractive smile immediately comes to mind and rightly so. Cosmetic dentistry is designed to help you have the smile you want rather than the smile Mother Nature may have handed to you. However, cosmetic dentistry is not only about the appearance of your smile. When you improve the look of your smile, chances are you’re also improving your dental health, too. Dr. Jonathan Mears and Dr. Laura Mears at JL Dental in Arnold, MO, want to make sure you are aware of the aesthetic and health advantages of cosmetic dentistry.

Cosmetic Dentistry and You

Have you ever noticed that after you’ve exercised you are more inspired to eat healthy? Something similar happens after you’ve had any kind of cosmetic dentistry procedure. Patients become more attentive to their smiles and are more inclined to brush and floss regularly in order to take better care of their teeth and gums. Who wants to risk the damaging consequences of tooth decay or gum disease after having spent time and money on enhancing the appearance of your smile?

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures to Improve Your Smile

One of the most popular and economical cosmetic dentistry treatments performed at JL Dental is teeth whitening. We use the Opalescence take-home whitening system to give you the most dramatic results without sensitivity.
In addition to foods and beverages such as tomato sauce, berries, coffee, tea and red wine, stains and discoloration can sometimes be the result of tobacco use, both smoking and chewing. Many patients finally “kick the habit” after teeth whitening, which can often lead to a tremendous improvement in overall health. Moreover, the risk of oral cancer falls off dramatically once your stop using tobacco products. For more severely stained teeth, Drs. Mears may recommend porcelain veneers.

Straight Teeth for Better Oral Health

We don’t need to tell you that a straight smile is more attractive than a smile with crooked teeth. However, did you know that a straight smile is also healthier? Cleaning around and between teeth that are straight and evenly spaced is easier and naturally leads to a cleaner mouth. With Invisalign from your dentist in Arnold you can enjoy the aesthetic and oral health benefits of a straight and beautiful smile.
Likewise, dental implants in Arnold, MO, are both cosmetic and restorative dentistry. The implant and attached tooth restoration give you back your complete smile, allowing you to speak, eat and laugh with confidence.
Discuss cosmetic dentistry options with JL Dental in Arnold, MO. Patients travel from Imperial, Oakville, Barnhart, and other nearby communities because of our reputation for complete general, restorative, and cosmetic dental care. Our family-owned dental practice enjoys treating our neighbors and their families to personalized service and comprehensive care. Contact us to make your appointment!

Your Arnold Dentist Explains How Dentures Stay in Place

March 30, 2016

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 1:53 am

When you are missing multiple teeth many aspects of your life are affected. Your nutrition may suffer because you’re not able to properly chew your food, making digestion a challenge. Your self-esteem may suffer because you feel self-conscious about talking or smiling in front of other people. Your oral health suffers when you begin to experience bone or additional tooth loss due to missing teeth. Dentures are one of the options for replacing missing teeth, but how do they stay in place? Your Arnold dentist explains more about dentures.

What is a Denture?

A denture is a removable appliance typically made of acrylic with prosthetic teeth, designed to replace an entire arch of teeth. The secret to the success of dentures is a perfect fit. Traditional dentures stay in place through suction to your underlying gum tissue and bone. A dental adhesive can sometimes be used if there’s not enough support from your jawbone.
Your dentures can easily be removed for cleaning and sleeping, and you should go into your dentist periodically to have them checked and ensure a proper fit.
While dentures immediately restore form and function to your smile, there is a learning curve at first as you’re getting used to your dentures. Eating and talking can take some getting used to, and some patients have trouble with slippage while they’re chewing at first. You may need to visit your dentist for some alignment appointments.

Implant Supported Dentures

For those patients who desire a more secure fit from their dentures, dental implants can be used to support them. Two implants are placed on your upper arch and two on your lower arch. After the appropriate healing time your implants will be strong enough for your dentures to “snap” into them, making movement or slippage a thing of the past!
Implant supported dentures can still be removed for regular cleaning and you should still have regular dental check ups to ensure the health and success of your implants. Many patients enjoy the freedom that implant supported dentures offer.
At JL Dental, Dr. Jonathon Mears and Dr. Laura Mears have been helping patients restore missing teeth with dentures in Arnold, MO for many years now. If implant supported dentures are your choice, these highly skilled dentists are both able to surgically place and restore dental implants so there is no reason for you to go anywhere else for treatment. If you’re missing multiple teeth, contact the team at JL Dental to learn which options might be available for you.

Never too late for your Arnold, MO orthodontist

March 25, 2016

Your Arnold, MO orthodontist offers metal braces and Clear Correct aligners to straighten adult teeth. Learn why it’s not too late to enjoy a great smile.

Now is the right time to get your teeth straightened by your Arnold, MO orthodontist. At JL Dental, Drs. JonathanandLauraMears see patients of all ages who desire healthier, more attractive smiles.

Why get braces as an adult?

Dentistry and oral health online magazine, “Dear Doctor,” estimates that 20 percent of American orthodontic patients are of non-traditional age. In other words, a new wave of adult patients has cropped up. Why should adults get Arnold, MO braces?
The more appropriate question may be, “Why not get braces as an adult?” And, the answer is simple. Adults need orthodontic correction for the same reasons children and teens do:
  • Improved facial appearance
  • Elimination of unattractive gaps, crowding, and protruding teeth (overjet)
  • Correction of misaligned bite (overbite, underbite, open bite, cross bite)
  • Improvement of self-confidence
  • Adjustment of smiles that shifted after earlier orthodontic correction
  • Preserving oral health and appearance for a lifetime
Crooked, crowded teeth are notorious for developing extensive dental decay and gum disease. While people desiring braces must have active gum disease treated before braces or aligners are applied, they definitely experience far less gingivitis or periodontitis when their smiles are finally corrected.

What does JL Dental offer?

Drs. Jonathan and Laura Mears offer traditional metal bracket and wire braces for the most complex orthodontic issues.  They also offer American-made Clear Correctaligners. Great for mild to moderate tooth alignment problems, Clear Correct aligners move teeth into more favorable positions without the hygiene, aesthetic or dietary problems metal braces cause.
Clear Correct aligners look like professional whitening trays. They are incredibly clear and thin–practically unnoticeable when the patient smiles, laughs or talks.
Customized according to Dr. Mears’ specific instructions and a special 3-dimensional model of the patient’s mouth, the aligners fit tightly over the top and bottom teeth. Worn about 22 hours a day, the appliances move teeth into healthier, better-looking positions. Delivered in pairs, the aligners straighten teeth comfortably and quickly–in less time than traditional braces.
Clear Correct appliances are fully removable, too. Patients take them out to eat and to perform routine brushing and flossing. There are no dietary restrictions or complex hygiene routines to follow. Patients simply enjoy the healthy foods they always have and use fluoride toothpaste and floss as usual. Plus, they can take the aligners out for special occasions such as professional presentations and weddings.

Whichever way–expect better oral health

Yes, older teens and adults can enjoy the benefits of orthodontics from JL Dental in Arnold, MO. Braces and aligners move teeth–no matter the age of the patient. Of course, the sooner you get them, the sooner you can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful, healthy smile.

Contact JL Dental to set-up your own orthodontic evaluation. The doctors will tell you how adult braces in Arnold, MO can help your smile and confidence, too.

Dental implants create smile miracles in Arnold, MO

February 11, 2016

Dental implants in Arnold, MO replace missing teeth and strengthen the jaw. Learn how these amazing devices preserve chewing, speech and facial structure.
Work toward keeping your teeth for a lifetime. However, if tooth loss happens, JL Dental in Arnold, MO offers patients the most innovative tooth replacement option available: the dental implant.

Why dental implants?

Dental implants counter all of the deleterious consequences of losing teeth:
  • slurred speech
  • compromised biting and chewing
  • unattractive, gapped smile
  •  prematurely aged facial appearance
  • recession of gum tissue
  • resorption of jaw bone at extraction sites

These prosthetics, composed of titanium screws, metal alloy extension posts, or abutments, and  natural-looking ceramic crowns, install right into the jaw bone during an in-office surgical procedure. With this solid foundation, dental implants are exceptionally strong and mimic the appearance, function and feel of real teeth.

What’s the secret?

It’s no secret, but science. Dental researchers discovered that human bone has a natural affinity for titanium. It’s a miraculous natural process called osseointegration in which the jaw bonds to the implant device.
So, when cosmetic dentist Dr. JonathanMearsorDr. LauraMearsofJLDentalplaces an implant device, the patient’s bone bonds right to it over several weeks of post-operative healing. After attachment of the abutment and crown, the dental implant patient in Arnold, MO displays a beautiful, fully-functional smile.
Unlike traditional bridgework and dentures, dental implants transfer a substantial amount of physical force to the jaw when patients bite and chew. This “exercise” keeps the jawbone dense and sizable.

Who can receive dental implants?

Many older teens and adults qualify for tooth replacement with dental implants. Patients should be in good overall and oral health and have sufficient bone density. People with poorly controlled diabetes or undergoing cancer therapy should wait until these conditions resolve. Additionally, good candidates are people who do not smoke and are diligent about daily flossing and twice daily brushing.
While dental implants do not decay, they can get an infection similar to gum disease. Termed “peri-implantitis,” this devastating condition may necessitate removal of implants. Therefore, regular at-home and in-office hygiene at JL Dental is critical.

What about time and expense?

From initial evaluation to final restoration, the implant procedure takes 4 months or so. It’s very important that the implant site heals fully so that the device can handle the substantial forces involved in eating.
Regarding expense, dental implants cost more initially than traditional fixed bridgework or dentures. However, because of their high success and retention rates, durability and longevity (They last for decades.), implants really cost less in the long run.

Get the best tooth replacement

Dental implants are truly miraculous. If you are faced with tooth extraction or are already missing one or more teeth, explore these amazing tooth replacements with the team at JL Dental. Contact the friendly office staff for a convenient consultation appointment.

Arnold, MO orthodontists fix smiles for better oral health

Your Arnold, MO orthodontist complements general dentistry with braces and Clear Correct aligners. Read about the health benefits of orthodontics.

Cavities, facial pain, gum disease–they are the business of the general dentist, right? Yes, they are, but they are also a concern for your Arnold, MO orthodontist at JL Dental. The science of orthodontics aims to prevent the deleterious effects of crooked smiles.

The reasons behind getting braces

Typically, when people think of orthodontic treatment, they think of getting a beautiful, straight smile and the increased self-confidence it brings. It’s true, braces of all varieties–traditional metal, ceramic, lingual and clear aligners–work toward that end, but did you know that orthodontics optimize oral and systemic health?
Well-aligned teeth are healthier teeth and gums are healthier, too. In general, when your mouth thrives, so does the rest of your body.
For instance, common orthodontic problems are:
  • overbite
  •  underbite
  •  overjet (protruding front teeth)
  • cross bite
  • open bite
  • tooth rotation
  • crowding
  • gaps
  • mismatched top and bottom midlines
  • jaw misalignment

The more severe the problem, the more prone teeth and gums are to decay and gum disease. In general, misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean and gums tend to accumulate bacteria-laden plaque and tartar. Resulting issues are:
  •  cavities
  •  red, swollen bleeding gums
  •  bad breath
  • uneven enamel wear
  • facial pain, toothaches and headaches from poor alignment

Adding to immediate oral health issues, gum disease from crooked teeth is directly linked to increased incidence of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, dementia, pregnancy complications, respiratory disease, stroke, heart attack and coronary artery disease.
In fact, a 2009 study published in the American Journal of Cardiology shows that people are 25 to 33 percent more likely to get coronary artery disease if they suffer from periodontitis, or advanced gum disease. The mouth/body connection is very strong.

What does a dentist do?

Dentists take care of overall oral health for patients of all ages. This means their scope of practice includes preventing and treating problems with the teeth and gums and their associated connective tissue, nerves, blood supply and supporting bone.

Preventive care

The Arnold, MO husband-wife team,Drs. JonathanandLauraMears, focus their skills on preventing, diagnosing and treating dental health problems such as cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and TMJ dysfunction. Of course, they believe in patient participation in treatment planning and take opportunities for teaching young and old the benefits of good oral hygiene and a healthy diet. Simple sealants and fluoride treatments protect teeth from decay. The Mears would rather see their patients every 6 months for routine check-ups, x-rays and cleanings than for expensive and complex restorations later on.

Arnold, MO braces

So, the professional team at JL Dental offer complete orthodontic consultations. Again, orthodontics  complement and complete other dental services. The Arnold, MO dentists recommend children be evaluated by age 7 to catch potential bite problems while they are developing, making treatment easier.
The dentists offer both traditional metal bracket and wire braces and American-made ClearCorrect invisible braces. Metal braces work well for a wide range of bite and alignment problems, and clear braces discreetly treat mild to moderate issues without the discomforts, appearance issues and hygiene difficulties of traditional braces.

Beautiful, Natural-Looking Tooth Replacement in Arnold

December 22, 2015

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 6:28 pm
If you’re missing one or more teeth, Drs. Jonathan and Laura Mears have excellent news for you, just in time for 2016: now, using the latest, most modern materials, they can make tooth replacement easier, quicker, more effective — and most of all, more beautiful than ever before. Attractive fixed bridges make tooth replacement in Arnold a breeze at JL Dental. Continue reading to learn more about this exciting option today!

Tooth Replacement in Arnold: Fixed Bridges

Fixed bridges offer a non-surgical replacement option for patients who are missing one or several teeth. A more conservative choice than dental implants, for example, fixed bridges work by creating a literal bridge over the gap left by missing teeth.

How Fixed Bridges Work

When you decide a beautiful fixed bridge is the tooth replacement option that you and your smile need, Dr. Mears will apply a metal-free, porcelain crown onto the two teeth that surround the gap left by the missing teeth. These act as anchors for the prosthetic replacement tooth (or teeth). Permanent and attractive, fixed bridges are a wonderful option for anyone who wants something more stable than dentures but less invasive than dental implants.

Further benefits of fixed bridges include the following.
  • They restore your ability to eat, speak and smile just like you always have
  • Fixed bridges restore the volume of your face for a more youthful appearance
  • Enjoy renewed self-confidence with a complete smile

Fixed Bridge Procedure

You can expect the procedure for your fixed bridge to take place over the span of two visits to Dr. Mears’ office. In the first, your surrounding teeth will be prepared for the porcelain crowns and impressions of your teeth will be made for the creation of your fixed bridge. You’ll leave this visit with a temporary bridge for use until your permanent device is ready.

In the second visit to JL Dental, your fixed bridge has been created and it’s time for placement. Dr. Mears will check its final fit and bite, and when we’re completely sure everything is 100 percent right with the fixed bridge, it will be permanently cemented into place — and you walk out of our Arnold dental practice with your beautiful, complete smile.

These exam appointments provide time patient-teaching on oral hygiene habits, nutrition and other topics important for young teeth and gums.

It’s never too late to get the flawless smile of your dreams. Whether you choose traditional bracket and band braces or ClearCorrect aligners, orthodontic treatment at JL Dental offers patients superior smile correction in a friendly dental office setting. Most general dental practitioners don’t offer traditional orthodontic treatment in-office, but JL Dental is committed to providing patients with a wide variety of quality dental care for the whole family. It’s our goal to offer patients the dental services they need in an office they are already comfortable with, and that includes orthodontic treatments to correct any misalignment.

Traditional Braces

Metal mouth, brace face, head gear. Traditional braces are often perceived negatively, but it’s no surprise to your Arnold, MO dentist that more adolescent, teen, and adult patients choose this smile correction option every year. Unlike metal braces even a decade ago, the braces we offer today are smaller and less obtrusive. The phrase “low profile” is used to describe some of the newer braces systems that offer excellent results with smaller brackets and bands. While many patients worry about how braces look, low profile braces not only look better, but feel better too because they don’t protrude as far from the surface of teeth. For image conscious adults and teens, we even offer tooth-colored traditional braces for a more conspicuous treatment plan. Bracket and band braces take between 18 and 24 months to correct smile alignment, but the results are predictable and long lasting. Even the most severe orthodontic conditions can be treated with traditional braces.

ClearCorrect Alignment Tray Orthodontics

Patients who wish to utilize a more cosmetically appealing braces system, those whose schedule prevents them from maintaining regular orthodontist appointments, or who lack dexterity to care for braces, may want to consider ClearCorrect. As the name implies, this orthodontic treatment utilizes a series of clear plastic alignment trays to correct alignment. These trays are removed during meals and while brushing and flossing, so there’s no impact on diet or dental care. Patients wear a set of trays for a predetermined time period and replace with the next set in the series, so orthodontist appointments are less frequent and much briefer than those necessary for traditional braces. ClearCorrect treatment is typically completed in under a year, and patients never worry about their appearance as ClearCorrect alignment trays are virtually invisible to the casual observer.
