Nothing ruins a fun day out with your dog at the Paw Park quicker than a dental emergency! When you’re breaking up a scuffle between dogs, you slip and knock your tooth out, which is not only painful, but also embarrassing. An immediate visit to your trusted team at JL Dental informs you that you’re going to have to replace that tooth. If you’ve suffered a dental emergency, dental implants in Arnold can help.

Handling Dental Emergencies

When you have a tooth that’s been broken, dislodged, or completely knocked out, time is of the essence. It’s important to visit your dentist as soon as possible because the chances of saving your tooth are best within the first hour of the accident or injury.
If it’s determined that your tooth can’t be saved Dr. Jonathan or Laura Mears will discuss tooth replacement options with you. It’s important to protect your oral health by replacing your tooth as soon as possible so your bone remains healthy and stimulated, and your healthy teeth are not at risk for shifting.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is one of the best replacement options that dentistry has to offer because it restores both your root and your tooth. Our doctors will surgically place a biocompatible titanium post into your bone and allow it time to heal and integrate with your bone. This creates a stable and firm foundation for your new tooth, which is a custom designed porcelain crown.
While many dentists refer their patients to specialists for the surgical placement of their dental implants, our doctors can handle all aspects of implant dentistry here in the comfort of our own office. This means you’ll work with the team you know and trust for both the placement and restoration of your dental implant.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

With your new implant tooth, you’ll enjoy all the function you had with your natural tooth, which means you’ll be eating, chewing, smiling, and brushing with ease again in no time. Implants are easy to take care of, as you’ll be able to brush and floss as you were used to, and they offer great longevity because with excellent home care and regular cleanings and checkups, they can potentially last for a lifetime. This also makes them a smart long-term investment in your oral health.
If you experience a dental emergency, the first thing to do is to contact your trusted team at JL Dental. We’ll make every effort to see you as soon as possible, get you diagnosed quickly, and put you back on the path to wellness again.

Your Arnold Orthodontist

October 17, 2016

Orthodontics, which is the branch of dentistry focused on straightening teeth, dates back all the way to ancient Egypt. Luckily for us, the methods of aligning teeth have vastly improved. We even have orthodontic options today that can align teeth with complete discretion. If you’re looking for a straighter, more beautiful smile, JL Dental is your premiere Arnold Orthodontist, and we have great options for you!

The History of Orthodontics

While we know that ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Etruscans all practiced forms of orthodontia, straightening teeth really didn’t take off until the 1700’s when Pierre Fauchard invented an appliance called the bandeau. This was a u-shaped metal appliance that fit around the teeth and attached to them to correct their alignment.
Orthodontics really made progress during the 1800’s when J.S. Gunnell invented the first headgear, which fastened outside of the mouth to apply pressure to the teeth. In 1880, Edward Hartley Angle identified the true properties of misalignment and used effective orthodontic appliances similar to what we use today to address the issues. He is considered the “Father of Modern Orthodontics.”
In the 1970’s, the invention of dental adhesives revolutionized orthodontics because brackets could now be glued to each tooth, instead of being attached with a wire wrapped around the tooth. During this time stainless steel replaced gold as the metal of choice for wires, which significantly reduced the cost of orthodontics and made it more accessible to the masses.

Orthodontics Today

Modern orthodontics has achieved great things, and now besides using traditional metal brackets and wires to straighten teeth, we also have the option to use removable clear plastic aligners that are virtually invisible apply gentle pressure and gradually move teeth.
This system is called Clear Correct, and it’s revolutionized orthodontics, offering busy adult and teenage patients an effective option for straightening their teeth with the utmost discretion. There are no dietary restrictions or changes to your home care routine with Clear Correct since aligners are removable, and most cases can be completed in 12-18 months.
At JL Dental, Drs. Laura and Jonathon Mears can help you achieve the healthy, straight smile you want. We can determine which type of orthodontics is right for your needs with a thorough examination, x-rays, and photos of your teeth. We’ll create a treatment plan that will have you smiling freely in no time.
If you’ve considered straightening your teeth, we encourage you to contact us today and learn more about the possibilities for your dream smile!

Dental Implants in Arnold Replace Missing Teeth

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 1:15 pm
Dental implants in Arnold imitate natural teeth from root to crown. The process at JL Dental is comfortable, and dental implants last indefinitely.

Dental Implants are Very Effective

Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option available today  Drs. JonathanandLauraMears at JL Dental recommend dental implants because these prosthetics preserve and strengthen the jaw bone after tooth loss due to tooth decay, injury or gum disease.

Comprised of a titanium screw, metal abutment, or post, and realistic porcelain crown, the dental implant resides in the jaw bone, transferring the physical forces of chewing and biting and therefore, effectively exercising the bone. The dental  implant also supports a lifelike porcelain crown. The bone melds right to the titanium implant through a natural  process called osseointegration.

The Dental Implant Treatment

The dentist carefully examines patients desiring dental implants. It’s very important that the jawbone be sufficiently strong and sized to anchor the device. However, if bone is weak or narrow, the dentist can perform augmentation procedures to strengthen it.
Patients should have good systemic health, too, and must be disciplined about at-home oral hygiene. While smokers receive dental implants, smoking cessation is always best for dental, and overall, health.
To begin the procedure, the cosmetic dentist in Arnold drills a small pilot hole in the jaw. The dentist screws the titanium implant into the hole and sutures the gums closed over the site. This procedure needs nothing more than local anesthesia to numb the area.
After some weeks of healing, the patient returns to JL Dental for a second visit to finish the process. Dr. Mears attaches the metal post and custom-designed porcelain crown, adjusting fit and bite. The dental implant is then complete.
At home, the patient flosses and brushes as usual. He or she comes to JL Dental every six months for hygienic cleanings and oral examinations.

Longevity and Versatility

The Academy of Osseointegration, comprised of experts in dental implants, maintain that 90 percent or more of these restorative procedures succeed, and over 90 percent of dental implants stay in place and function for decades. In fact, one of the reasons why dental implants are preferable to bridgework and dentures is that traditional tooth replacement options must be replaced every ten years or less. While dental implants may cost more initially, they are truly more budget friendly over the patient’s lifetime.
Also, traditional tooth replacements do not preserve the jaw bone. Gums and bone recede quickly after tooth loss, and unfortunately, facial appearance ages, and oral function suffers.
On the other hand, dental implants are very versatile. They anchor bridgework and full dentures, too–either removable or fixed. Your implant dentist will create a personalized treatment plan that fits your exact oral health needs.

The Difference Between Crowns and Dental Implants in Arnold

August 30, 2016

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 5:02 pm

Whether you have a tooth in need of repair, or you need a replacement for a missing tooth, modern dentistry has reliable and effective options for you. Dr. Jonathon Mears and Dr. Laura Mears can help restore and even enhance your smile. At JL Dental we strive to meet all of our patients’ dental needs in one stop, so you’ll rarely ever go elsewhere for care. Here we’ll discuss the difference between crowns and dental implants so you can make educated decisions about your treatment and your oral health.

What is a Dental Crown?

For a tooth that’s been damaged beyond the scope of what a dental filling can repair, Dr. Mears will likely recommend a crown for you. Dental crowns are designed to fit over your damaged tooth like a cap. It essentially replaces the full function of your tooth, while protecting your root. Crowns are ideal for repairing:
  • ·  Excessive wear and damage
  • ·  Chipping and fractures
  • ·  Broken teeth
  • ·  A tooth that has had root canal therapy

What is a Dental Implant?

For patients who’ve lived with one or more missing teeth, an implantis the best option dentistry has to offer. This is because it replaces both your root and your tooth, and protects the integrity of your oral health. A biocompatible titanium post is surgically placed into your bone to take the place of your root. After it’s allowed to heal and integrate with your bone, a porcelain crown is placed to restore your tooth.
With an implant you’ll enjoy the same function you had with your natural tooth, which means that you’ll be able to eat, chew, smile and talk as you were used to. You’ll also be able to brush and floss like you normally would, and with excellent home care, your implant has the potential to last for many years, and for a lifetime in some cases.
At JL Dental, our team is well equipped to help you with any type of dental situation you may be experiencing. Unlike other dental offices, we can both place and restore your dental implant in the comfort of our own office, which means that you don’t have to go elsewhere for surgery. We use only the finest dental materials in the industry, so whether you receive a regular crown or an implant crown, you’ll be receiving a restoration you can trust.
Contact our office today to learn more and schedule your appointment, we’ll help you determine which type of treatment is right for your lifestyle, needs and budget.

Crown in a Day

July 31, 2016

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 5:35 pm
When you fracture a tooth, Drs. Jonathan or Laura Mears of JL Dental may recommend a dental crown to rebuild the tooth and protect the remaining tooth structure. Depending on how deeply your tooth is fractured, this can be an emergency. If that’s the case, then we can permanently repair your tooth with a crown in a day. Using the E4D system, our dentists can design, fabricate and bond your new crown over a broken tooth in just one appointment.

E4D in Arnold, MO

E4D is a comprehensive system that allows our dentists to manufacture dental crowns and other restorations right here in the office. Normally, we provide traditional crowns that are handcrafted in a dental lab. But when you need a crown in a hurry, E4D can be the ideal solution.

The E4D System

E4D consists of three separate units that work together in order to provide our patients with one-day crowns. The process begins with a digital intraoral camera that captures a detailed image of the damaged tooth, as well as surrounding and opposing teeth. These images are transferred to E4D’s computer, which is loaded with special software that creates a 3D virtual representation of your tooth. With this information, the computer designs your dental crown. Every detail is included—color, size, and shape, right down to the cusps and grooves of the chewing surface if the tooth is a molar. In this way, your new crown will feel no different than your natural tooth did when you bite down.

Finally, the design is sent to the milling unit that will fabricate your crown right here in our Arnold dental practice. Special burrs carve the crown from a single block of porcelain. Your crown will be ready for placement in less than 30 minutes.
Before bonding your crown into place, Dr. Jonathan Mears or Dr. Laura Mears will double-check the crown to make sure the fit is perfect. We also can use hand tools to further polish or stain your crown to exactly match the sheen of nearby teeth. Once the crown is cemented into place, you will have a fully functional tooth again.
To care for your new one-day crown, all you have to do is brush and floss just as you do for your natural teeth.

For a Crown in a Day, Call Our Office

If you’ve broken a tooth and suspect that you might need a dental crown, contact JL Dental to learn more about crowns in a day with the E4D System.

Your Dentist in Arnold, MO, Discusses Dental Health and Cosmetic Dentistry

When most people think of cosmetic dentistry, a more attractive smile immediately comes to mind and rightly so. Cosmetic dentistry is designed to help you have the smile you want rather than the smile Mother Nature may have handed to you. However, cosmetic dentistry is not only about the appearance of your smile. When you improve the look of your smile, chances are you’re also improving your dental health, too. Dr. Jonathan Mears and Dr. Laura Mears at JL Dental in Arnold, MO, want to make sure you are aware of the aesthetic and health advantages of cosmetic dentistry.

Cosmetic Dentistry and You

Have you ever noticed that after you’ve exercised you are more inspired to eat healthy? Something similar happens after you’ve had any kind of cosmetic dentistry procedure. Patients become more attentive to their smiles and are more inclined to brush and floss regularly in order to take better care of their teeth and gums. Who wants to risk the damaging consequences of tooth decay or gum disease after having spent time and money on enhancing the appearance of your smile?

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures to Improve Your Smile

One of the most popular and economical cosmetic dentistry treatments performed at JL Dental is teeth whitening. We use the Opalescence take-home whitening system to give you the most dramatic results without sensitivity.
In addition to foods and beverages such as tomato sauce, berries, coffee, tea and red wine, stains and discoloration can sometimes be the result of tobacco use, both smoking and chewing. Many patients finally “kick the habit” after teeth whitening, which can often lead to a tremendous improvement in overall health. Moreover, the risk of oral cancer falls off dramatically once your stop using tobacco products. For more severely stained teeth, Drs. Mears may recommend porcelain veneers.

Straight Teeth for Better Oral Health

We don’t need to tell you that a straight smile is more attractive than a smile with crooked teeth. However, did you know that a straight smile is also healthier? Cleaning around and between teeth that are straight and evenly spaced is easier and naturally leads to a cleaner mouth. With Invisalign from your dentist in Arnold you can enjoy the aesthetic and oral health benefits of a straight and beautiful smile.
Likewise, dental implants in Arnold, MO, are both cosmetic and restorative dentistry. The implant and attached tooth restoration give you back your complete smile, allowing you to speak, eat and laugh with confidence.
Discuss cosmetic dentistry options with JL Dental in Arnold, MO. Patients travel from Imperial, Oakville, Barnhart, and other nearby communities because of our reputation for complete general, restorative, and cosmetic dental care. Your Arnold Dentist Explains How Dentures Stay in Place

March 30, 2016

Filed under: Uncategorized — jldental @ 1:53 am

When you are missing multiple teeth many aspects of your life are affected. Your nutrition may suffer because you’re not able to properly chew your food, making digestion a challenge. Your self-esteem may suffer because you feel self-conscious about talking or smiling in front of other people. Your oral health suffers when you begin to experience bone or additional tooth loss due to missing teeth. Dentures are one of the options for replacing missing teeth, but how do they stay in place? Your Arnold dentist explains more about dentures.

What is a Denture?

A denture is a removable appliance typically made of acrylic with prosthetic teeth, designed to replace an entire arch of teeth. The secret to the success of dentures is a perfect fit. Traditional dentures stay in place through suction to your underlying gum tissue and bone. A dental adhesive can sometimes be used if there’s not enough support from your jawbone.
Your dentures can easily be removed for cleaning and sleeping, and you should go into your dentist periodically to have them checked and ensure a proper fit.
While dentures immediately restore form and function to your smile, there is a learning curve at first as you’re getting used to your dentures. Eating and talking can take some getting used to, and some patients have trouble with slippage while they’re chewing at first. You may need to visit your dentist for some alignment appointments.

Implant Supported Dentures

For those patients who desire a more secure fit from their dentures, dental implants can be used to support them. Two implants are placed on your upper arch and two on your lower arch. After the appropriate healing time your implants will be strong enough for your dentures to “snap” into them, making movement or slippage a thing of the past!
Implant supported dentures can still be removed for regular cleaning and you should still have regular dental check ups to ensure the health and success of your implants. Many patients enjoy the freedom that implant supported dentures offer.
At JL Dental, Dr. Jonathon Mears and Dr. Laura Mears have been helping patients restore missing teeth with dentures in Arnold, MO for many years now. If implant supported dentures are your choice, these highly skilled dentists are both able to surgically place and restore dental implants so there is no reason for you to go anywhere else for treatment. If you’re missing multiple teeth, contact the team at JL Dental to learn which options might be available for you.
